"Zim?" he called quietly, not wanting to come too close when the smaller male was still upset.
For a long moment, Dib was only met with silence.
Zim stayed where he was, unmoving, keeping his stare glued to the lazily blinking screen.
Just when the boy came to the conclusion that Zim didn't want to talk to him, after all, and that leaving him alone was a good idea, the alien gave a little huff and turned to face him.

Where it all started
Rubbing at his tired eyes, Dib took a moment to collect himself. It was late, way into the early morning hours, but this needed to be done before the chemical reaction was over. He pushed his large glasses back up his forehead and leant over the glaringly pink microscope again. What he saw made his heart beat faster in excitement. The light yellow nanomachines beneath the thin glass worked fast, removing the faulty bases from the sample's DNA while leaving the natural structures intact. A small smile formed on his lips after a few minutes, the sample almost completely sanitized and the tiny nanomachines still working won

Zim kept running but couldn't shake the feeling he was being watched. He looked back to see Dib watching him from behind.
Dib continued to watch Zim as he ran, even when the other looked back at him. It was kind of hard not to when Zim was only a little farther ahead of him. The gap between them, however, soon began to grow as Dib started to fall behind. He was getting tired and couldn't keep his regular pace up for much longer. With the pummeling his body had taken, he had to admit he was having some trouble breathing. The pain of fresh bruises forming along his torso made it hard for him to concentrate on much else.
